January 6th, What I've learned?
Inner Journey #6, January 6th 2020
Today was eye opening being able to explore New Orleans on my own terms during our free day from class. I spent my day with my classmate Mindy, walking the streets of New Orleans, shopping local store, eating at the French Market as well as restaurants, and talking to locals. During my shopping experience one local I talked to has lived in the city for 57 years. This is not only where she was born but where she started and raised a family of her own. While talking we shared stories about life, personal experiences, and she gave me loads of tips and information about New Orleans. It was important to me when coming to New Orleans to have time to talk to a local to learn the life of the city from someone to has personally lived it.
Where all the tours we have done thus far have been absolutely amazing, I think today was my favorite day. When starting this class, we were all asked how New Orleans speaks to us and today I was able to get some answers for that. While shopping in the city I was able to discover that fashion is just another part of the New Orleans lifestyle. Since culture is rooted so deeply in ones every day life in New Orleans, fashion is just another component to add to it. New Orleans has very unusual and very unique costumes, especially during Mardi Gras time. Today was the beginning of the Mardi Gras carnival season which allowed me to gain first hand experience of a day in the life of locals.
